What is the significance of forty in figuring the time of the end?

I have a small book entitled, "88 Reasons Jesus Will Return in 1988." Israel was reestablished as a nation in 1948. "This generation" shall not pass until Jesus returns; 40 years was a generation to the Jews. Therefore, Jesus will return in 1988 (if not sooner).
